My Love/Hate Relationship

Don't you hate blog posts that are too personal, and no one really cares about the subject matter of that particular person's situation when there are serious issues out there to discuss. Do you? Well, then you better read no further because this is one of those posts.

Here's the deal: I am doing a low carb diet. Yes I know they are not long term, I know once you have that one potato chip you gain 7 lbs immediately, and yes I know that it is completely unrealistic and not very healthy eating a bunch of red meat and sugar free jello. BUT and that is a big BUT (no pun intended), this diet seems to jump start my weight loss like no other diet I've done before. It would be so much healthier to go to mostly raw foods like I have done in the past, or simply cut my portion size. I can do this, but I have some serious pounds to drop and summer has already started here in CC. Long term, none of these diets are that fun. I know I could join weight watchers, but I'd really rather get a pool membership for my bored kids instead.

Okay, here is the hate part of the relationship. I hate going to Herb's burger joint (which is awesome) after church and watching everyone around me chow down on juicy burgers, stringy onion rings and crispy fries while Ms Susie Low Carb sticks to a grilled chicken salad. It was great, but my mouth was drooling over the cheeseburgers. I also hate that summer will be filled with get togethers involving sweets like homemade ice cream, cookies and sweet tea(none of that fake stuff for me). How in the world am I supposed to eat a fajita without a flour tortilla? I hate those nasty low-carb ones.

Now, for the love part of the low-carb diet. I have already dropped six pounds in two weeks and my tight clothes are starting to fit. Within another two weeks, I'll possibly be able to wear my favorite jeans and shorts again. I can also make it some what healthy with salads and grilled fish and chicken. I also found a low-carb butter pecan icecream that's not half bad.

Back to more hate: I went to see Prince Caspian the other day and couldn't have my buttered popcorn and chocolate covered almonds. The movie was great, but it could have been a 10 with my favorite treats accompanying the experience.

Is this what normal 40 year old women talk about? I'm just asking. It is a sad day that I have had to result to such drastic measures, but when the weather channel says its 84 and feels like 94 with 77% humidity, this girl has to wear a pair of shorts, not to mention the dreaded swimsuit. (Like my run-on sentence).

Okay, I'm done with this truly awful post and my kids are at a friend's house, so I'm off to do something just for me.

I hear ya, Girl! i was just checking my email and the scripture for today is
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 that says, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." Even though I'm sure the Apostle Paul was not addressing our weight loss issues, I'm beginning to think that the only way for a 40 year-old chick to lose weight is to "run...with strict discipline...in a way that feels like I'm beating myself up! But that's just my translation. I'm sure it's meant to go much deeper than that! Kudos to you for sticking with the low-carb for 2 weeks. That is very hard to do! (Goes back to the whole "strict discipline" thing!) Keep sharing! I'm looking for some inspiration...

Love ya!

Well, here I am reading your 'embarrassing post'. Not so much. I love that youre honest, that you are trying something, and you have to do whatever works for you. I'm darned impressed that you've already lost 6 lbs! Good for you! xoxo

I read it clear to the end too, friend. Keeping it real will always keep me reading.

I'm proud of you for sticking with it, Susie. I've done the low carb thing a couple of times myself, and while it did quickly take off some poundage . . . I was mostly miserable.

Maybe once you lose the initial amount you can go back to one of the other things that's worked in the past without such a drastic denial level to it.

One thing that works for me is to stop eating at dinner. No snacks at all after 8 pm. I try to brush my teeth soon after dinner in order to "trick" myself into thinking I can't have anything else after my teeth are brushed.

Just my own rambling . . .

Praying for success for you. It's already hot here, too.

Okay I'm just shocked that your hubby made a comment twice in two days. LOL!!! You are doing good. I'm here to encourge you in anyway I can. Hamburgers, just eat the meat and all the fixins without the bread. That will inspire all the others. Remember what the hot heat can do for those muscles. Keep it up. You are doing good. I'm proud of you in so many ways!!!! So many ways!!!

You're actually eating in a very healthy way -- read "Protein Power" by Drs. Eades. And it can easily be sustained for a lifetime. You'll eat good food, keep the weight off (while your friends are struggling, counting calorie, etc), never feel hungry (because fat and protein are satisfying) ... No downsides, aside from the occasional temptation to join everyone chowing down on French Fries. Anyway, congrats.

I personally LOVE blogs like this, cuz it makes me more at home. Like I really know you! So keep it coming and keep us posted on your success with losing weight. I need to lose a ton of weight but I just decided I wasn't going to let it keep me and my little guy from having a good summer. So people will just have to turn their heads and look the other way when I come around them at the pool.

You're too funny! I'm trying to get back into the swing of things, as well. Fitday.com is very cool. I like to count my calories just for a month or two to remind myself of those little snacks that seem harmless (chips and salsa) that wind up having half my calorie intake for the day!!! I'm so glad you're back in CC. You'll be wearing shorts in no time!

I salute you. My idea of getting fit is ... well, playing Wii Fit. Hmp.

Yep, after visiting your Blog for the 1st time today, I have to say...this is what we talk about when in our 40's!!

Then when we're in our 50's, it's "stuff" like high blood sugar, high cholesterol and high blood pressure - YIKES!!!

Even since I've LOST 51# in the past 2 years...the only thing that the Doctor has done or I have done that has made a "dent" in my NUMBERS is the "way" in which I eat - lots of fruits, veggies and OLIVE OIL and my MEDS!!

I know alot of this is hereditary (my dad had all of the above and my mom does too...and my younger sister is FAR worse than I am).

I just Praise God for giving me the stamina for "sticking" with the plan (for the most part). HE gives me a new day every day!!!

~Blessings to you...

Great post! Losing weight appears to be much more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge. I read in a book (perhaps the Maker’s Diet?) that the stomach has neurotransmitters kind of like a second (less advanced) brain. Sigh… if only the 2 brains would agree.

Dude! Your hubby rocks!
